The first First Annual Charlotte RACE Against the Odds 5K to benefit the Cure Starts Now Foundation was held last Saturday In Weddington, NC. The race is an annual event in honor of Grace McGrath to help raise awareness and support for research and a possible cure for DIPG, which is a rare inoperable brain tumor. I was astounded at the number of people who came out in support of the cause. There were over 700 participants and they raised over 51,000 dollars, which was over three times their goal! I was connected with the McGraths through my wife Rachel. Over the last few months she has worked very closely with them on their website and marketing. More information on DPIG and Grace can be found at Soar with Grace.
Engagements: Scott and Tania
I love trying techniques such as flash composites, Brenizer methods, and editorial lighting in photos where romance is a key factor. It does not always lend itself to those kinds of photos but under certain conditions can really add depth and a “cool” factor to your images. I used to use off camera flashes in every shot when I did skateboarding photography a number of years ago so I am accustom to modifying light to get a desired look. I got back into it recently after attending a workshop centered around making the best images out of mundane environments. Most of what was taught used off camera lighting and light modification to make a compelling image. The fun part of shooting with flashes is that you are able to shoot in situations where natural light is not favorable and still get fantastic results. For Scott and Tania’s engagement session we opted to shoot in Uptown Charlotte right as the sun set. This put us at the perfect time of day to use off camera flashes and some special techniques to get some very amazing images.
Erin Ashley Makeup
A couple weeks ago I had the privilege of photographing models for Erin Ashley Makeup. Erin has impeccable taste in the makeup and each girl looked gorgeous! Thank you to Jesse, Kirsty, Savannah, Rachel, Olivia, Michelle, and Emily for being the models and thank you to Katy Barbour for doing hair. You can view Erin’s website at Erin Ashley Makeup.
Engagements: Jim and Lynne
It is not often that I get to shoot with a couple like Jim and Lynne in a location like this HUGE old Oak tree in Waxhaw. The day was absolutely perfect for photographs! Jim and Lynne have known each other for over twenty years. They met back when both of them worked for the same airline and were on the same route together. They dated briefly but parted ways to different sections of the country and didn’t pick back up until Jim called her Father to get in touch with her. Jim proposed this past January in Colorado to Lynne and after so many years of knowing one another they are getting married this Sunday. I simply cannot wait to shoot with them and think their photos will be absolutely stunning.
Engagements: Houston and Dani
There is nothing more personal than a couple letting me into their home. Dani and Houston opted to have an engagement session that started with them doing what they love most, preparing food! From there they took me out onto one of their favorite local Greenways. It featured a wonderful wooded path that was really a wonderful way to end the shoot on.
Engagements: Tristan and Jessica
Another spring engagement session for you today. I will say this now Tristan and Jessica are hilarious, just hilarious. They both exude energy and kept each other laughing through the entire session. Nothing gets their mood down. Even when Jessica’s feet were aching from the heels she was wearing Tristan picked her up and piggy-backed her. They both are so full of life it is contagious. I can’t wait for their wedding in June at Bonamanzee in Madison, NC.
Engagements: Jeff and Amanda
I am so excited that Spring has come and boy has it come with a vengeance. It is wonderful that the trees are blooming and green is the dominant color again. With Spring comes allergies and I’ve been itching to shoot some more engagements. Luckily I was able to settle that and bring you this engagement session.
Jeff and Amanda are two of the most wonderful people I have ever met. Their love and affection towards one another translated so easily to the images. They have a solid, calm, and steady feeling about them. Jeff truly cherishes Amanda and she adores him. Quite the pair, don’t you think?
Dan Myles
Dan Myles is owner of Hoss Leather out of Chapel Hill, NC. He has been leather working since his early college days when he lived in Australia.
Community Spotlight: The Good Child’s Leather
Our good friend Sarah Pohlig recently allowed me to photograph at her shared workshop in Chapel Hill, NC. Within the last couple months she has started The Good Child’s Leather to expand her passion for leather working. She learned everything she knows about leather from Dan Myles (Another blog post for him to follow).
The workshop is owned by Dan and she utilizes the space for her creations. “I love working with leather” she says “I love the feel of it, the smell, the long life and the history behind it. I would love to learn everything there is to know about leather working. The purpose of Good Child’s Leather is, currently, to make beautiful things. I sell bracelets and cuffs to afford more leather so that I can make more beautiful things.” Sarah says that she would have joined Dan in his business but she prefers the more feminine look where “delicacy meets durability”. “I like intricate and detailed, I like finished edges and the glisten of bridle leather, I love the dyes and stains, the different stitches, the hundred or so braids in Dan’s outback book. Currently I’m playing with the line between leather and jewelry.”
Sarah is excited that her work will be available at a new Carrboro market hosted by Erin Griffin from 10am to 5pm on April 14th. The market itself should run every second Saturday of each month, more details can be found here: http://www.carrborocraftmarket.com/index.html
Fine Art: Larissa
For a photographer it is incredibly important to challenge yourself. Give yourself something to think through and plan out from scratch. Personal work gives me a chance to work through ideas and challenge myself with lighting. I generally do not use harsher, direct light, but tend to lean towards the softer, all illuminating light so this shoot was a bit more stretching. It was great to get out of the usual thought process and give myself more options to work with. I am also very pleased to say that I burned through several rolls of Kodak Portra 400 with my Mamiya 645 AFD and hope to get those developed and up on here as soon as possible. A huge thanks to Larissa for working with that direct sunlight in her eyes and giving me such grand photos.
