Portraits: Annie

Little girl walking in Waxhaw, NC

Annie is one of the sweetest babies. I met her mom, Sarah, a few months before Annie was born and they’ve both been incredibly dear to me ever since. She loves to crawl up onto your lap and look through photo albums, discovering various family members, over and over again. She loves other babies and children, baby dolls, dogs, being outside, and eating. Recently, Sarah and Annie came down from Chapel Hill to visit their family in Waxhaw, NC and Nate was able to capture Annie at her best! We hope you adorable these moments as much as we adore Annie!

Girl in evening gown in front of stone wall

Hark! What light through yonder window breaks?! Tis my brother and sister! Yeah, I am not that good at scripting or even ripping off Shakespeare. These are photos that I took of my brother and sister while on a recent trip to Colorado. They both are actors and work in local theater groups in Colorado Springs and Denver. They needed a couple of shots for promotional purposes so I obliged. (ps my brother does not really smoke but we wanted to get a tough guy look haha)

Our Engagement Story

Woman showing off engagement ring in Aspen, CO

It has been a year and a day now that Rachel and I have been together. What a time it has been! SO much growth, both in ourselves, our relationship, and our walk with God. I cannot express how much things have changed for the “Oh so wonderful!”. Here is our engagement story told from my side:

I began my talks about the ring and what I would like it to look like. It seems like many couples go together to decide on a ring but I felt that it would destroy the surprise. Rachel had always said that a ring should reflect the man as well as his fiance, so I was given free reign. I asked for one hint as to what she would like and her response was, “simple”.

To me this was perfect, I could find one that would mesh both my old fashioned and her modern. Something classic and elegant yet still with a timelessly modern look.

Now that I had the ring all laid out, it was time to choose my method of proposing. I wanted it to be away from all of the normal in our lives. Where oh where would it be?

We had planned a trip to visit my family in Colorado the last week in January. I had toyed around with the idea of proposing there but felt that it might be a bit out of her comfort zone. I decided that we would just enjoy the trip.

While on the plane, I asked Rachel if she would like to take a trip to Boston in February. My intention was to propose in her in New England so that she could enjoy it with her family. As soon as I suggested it I saw her face fall and knew that she had expected it this trip. Realizing that she knew I would propose in Boston I decided that Colorado it was. Now that she was not expecting it to happen here I could surprise her. I had the ring finished and over-nighted to my parent’s house.

Two days later we ventured into the Rockies to visit the college I attended in Glenwood Springs. Little did Rachel know I had acquired the ring and planned on proposing while in Aspen at 3pm. My friend Scott would meet us there and, unbeknownst to Rachel, take photos of the proposal.

On our way up we kept hitting traffic and I became slightly panicked that we would not make the 3pm time slot. After 3 traffic jams and almost 6 hours of driving we roared into Aspen, parked, and walked to the park I had chosen. As we arrived I suddenly remembered that I had not put a ticket into my car to park. How horrible if my car was towed or ticketed right after proposing! I left Rachel on a bench and booked it back to the car to purchase a ticket. While jogging back to the park I had time to think of what I wanted to say. I wanted to tell her about how I wanted to always be there for her, how she has changed my life, and how there was nothing that I would love more than to spend the rest of my days with her.

Yesterday, Rachel and I visited with our friends, the Pohligs, in Waxhaw, NC. They live in a beautiful house tucked away in the woods. Recently they built a chapel to house Jim’s organ and Steinway piano. The piano dates back to 1913 and was rebuilt in Richmond, Virginia by Henry Dorflein around 1965. According to Jim, “Rebuilding in this case would mean a new soundboard and probably new action, and certainly a new pinblock–the very heavy, enormous beam of wood that holds all the tuning pins. Oh, and new strings, of course.”

The piano has much meaning for Jim beyond it’s aesthetic appeal. It has been in the family for over 40 years and still sounds and looks beautiful.

My Amazing Rachel

The love of my life!

This is my fiancee, Rachel. We met almost a year ago to the day and I don’t think I can ever fully describe how much joy and wide-eyed wonderment I have felt from just having her at my side over this past year. Seriously, I know that it has been said a thousand times, but I never expected a gal like her to ever pick a guy like me. Go figure! We began dating in late March 2010 and I proposed on the 29th of January this year. There will be time to tell that story later though or if you must know now just contact me! If I am honest, I am a bit ashamed that it has taken me so long to do a real photo shoot with her!

It was very rainy last Saturday but I was bound and determined to get some great shots of my fabulous woman! Now it didn’t all go as planned believe me. I was very very picky about where I wanted to shoot it and as we drove around she would say, “How about here?” and I would respond, “No, it’s not right”. I may be silly, but when a place catches my eye and I feel right about it, it is time to shoot. What seemed like a year and about a hundred miles, lead us to a neighborhood with a plot of woods that had not been stripped away. Here is the result of great light, some rain drops, 10 minutes of shooting, and a gorgeous woman in a furry coat!
