Fall has to be my favorite time of year here in North Carolina. If there was a region of the world that was perpetually fall, I would pack up and move in a heartbeat. The light is at it’s finest and most gentle, colors become more vibrant, and the atmosphere is just a dream to shoot in. Andrea and Ryan utilized this perfect concoction during their engagement shoot. The cool weather and relaxed feel of the day made for some exceptional photos.

Uptown Charlotte Engagements

I love trying techniques such as flash composites, Brenizer methods, and editorial lighting in photos where romance is a key factor. It does not always lend itself to those kinds of photos but under certain conditions can really add depth and a “cool” factor to your images. I used to use off camera flashes in every shot when I did skateboarding photography a number of years ago so I am accustom to modifying light to get a desired look. I got back into it recently after attending a workshop centered around making the best images out of mundane environments. Most of what was taught used off camera lighting and light modification to make a compelling image. The fun part of shooting with flashes is that you are able to shoot in situations where natural light is not favorable and still get fantastic results. For Scott and Tania’s engagement session we opted to shoot in Uptown Charlotte right as the sun set. This put us at the perfect time of day to use off camera flashes and some special techniques to get some very amazing images.

Engagements: Jim and Lynne

Nathan Abplanalp - Charlotte Photographer (16)

It is not often that I get to shoot with a couple like Jim and Lynne in a location like this HUGE old Oak tree in Waxhaw. The day was absolutely perfect for photographs! Jim and Lynne have known each other for over twenty years. They met back when both of them worked for the same airline and were on the same route together. They dated briefly but parted ways to different sections of the country and didn’t pick back up until Jim called her Father to get in touch with her. Jim proposed this past January in Colorado to Lynne and after so many years of knowing one another they are getting married this Sunday. I simply cannot wait to shoot with them and think their photos will be absolutely stunning.

Couple kissing during an engagement session in Charlotte NC

There is nothing more personal than a couple letting me into their home. Dani and Houston opted to have an engagement session that started with them doing what they love most, preparing food! From there they took me out onto one of their favorite local Greenways. It featured a wonderful wooded path that was really a wonderful way to end the shoot on.

Couple in a NC Train Station

Another spring engagement session for you today. I will say this now Tristan and Jessica are hilarious, just hilarious. They both exude energy and kept each other laughing through the entire session. Nothing gets their mood down. Even when Jessica’s feet were aching from the heels she was wearing Tristan picked her up and piggy-backed her. They both are so full of life it is contagious. I can’t wait for their wedding in June at Bonamanzee in Madison, NC.

Couple hugging on the shores of Lake Norman in Charlotte NC

I am so excited that Spring has come and boy has it come with a vengeance. It is wonderful that the trees are blooming and green is the dominant color again. With Spring comes allergies and I’ve been itching to shoot some more engagements. Luckily I was able to settle that and bring you this engagement session.

Jeff and Amanda are two of the most wonderful people I have ever met. Their love and affection towards one another translated so easily to the images. They have a solid, calm, and steady feeling about them. Jeff truly cherishes Amanda and she adores him. Quite the pair, don’t you think?

I can’t tell you how fantastic these two are. They are so warm and welcoming that I felt like part of the family. If I didn’t know better I would say they were already married the way they are just the best of friends. They chose to start the shoot in Kannapolis near the Gem Theater, which they have frequented since childhood. From there we moved to Historic Gold Hill and grabbed some shots before the sun went down. I am so excited that they chose us to be their wedding photographers – September cannot come fast enough.
