Fall has to be my favorite time of year here in North Carolina. If there was a region of the world that was perpetually fall, I would pack up and move in a heartbeat. The light is at it’s finest and most gentle, colors become more vibrant, and the atmosphere is just a dream to shoot in. Andrea and Ryan utilized this perfect concoction during their engagement shoot. The cool weather and relaxed feel of the day made for some exceptional photos.

Tyler and Kirstie chose to meet and embrace minutes before the ceremony. The blindfold kept Tyler from seeing Kirstie until she walked down the aisle while still allowing them to hold hands and speak words of encouragement to one another.

Engagements: Scott and Tania

Uptown Charlotte Engagements

I love trying techniques such as flash composites, Brenizer methods, and editorial lighting in photos where romance is a key factor. It does not always lend itself to those kinds of photos but under certain conditions can really add depth and a “cool” factor to your images. I used to use off camera flashes in every shot when I did skateboarding photography a number of years ago so I am accustom to modifying light to get a desired look. I got back into it recently after attending a workshop centered around making the best images out of mundane environments. Most of what was taught used off camera lighting and light modification to make a compelling image. The fun part of shooting with flashes is that you are able to shoot in situations where natural light is not favorable and still get fantastic results. For Scott and Tania’s engagement session we opted to shoot in Uptown Charlotte right as the sun set. This put us at the perfect time of day to use off camera flashes and some special techniques to get some very amazing images.

For a photographer it is incredibly important to challenge yourself. Give yourself something to think through and plan out from scratch. Personal work gives me a chance to work through ideas and challenge myself with lighting. I generally do not use harsher, direct light, but tend to lean towards the softer, all illuminating light so this shoot was a bit more stretching. It was great to get out of the usual thought process and give myself more options to work with. I am also very pleased to say that I burned through several rolls of Kodak Portra 400 with my Mamiya 645 AFD and hope to get those developed and up on here as soon as possible. A huge thanks to Larissa for working with that direct sunlight in her eyes and giving me such grand photos.

This is David Wimbish. He is a musician who lives in the Greensboro area in North Carolina and is a good friend. It always seems to take too long before Rachel and I are able to spend a day with them. Several weeks ago though we were able to do just that. David is one of those guys that just oozes talent, his humble demeanor will never let you on to how talented he is. Every time we hang out I see more and more how deeply music runs in his soul. His music is all his own but the thing that astounds me about David is the fact that he will readily welcome someone into it. His band is called “The Collection” and it truly is that. A collection of people who all form together to create this work of art that is David’s music.
